Term Limit Constitutional Amendments Proposed

Right out of the cage, two amendments to the Constitution regarding term limits of elected officials have been proposed in the House of Representatives. However, they’re running in opposite directions from one another.

H.J Res. 14 proposes a constitutional amendment that would establish term limits for members of Congress across all the United States. The legislation is sponsored by U.S. Representative Todd Platts – with no cosponsors yet.

H.J. Res. 5 proposes a constitutional amendment that would remove term limits from the Presidency, so that one person might be President of the United States for decades. This legislation is sponsored by U.S. Representative Jose Serrano – with no cosponsors yet.

The context of the moment is key in understanding why amendments like these are being offered. Jose Serrano is a Democrat, and the relatively young incoming President is in his political party. Todd Platts, on the other hand, is a Republican, and his political party holds a minority of seats in Congress.
