Did Barack Obama Apply to Occidental College as a Foreigner Named Barry Soetero? Is New Jersey a Portal for the Flaxxian Alliance Starfleet?

There’s a real doozy of a “news story” making the rounds through e-mails and on right-wing websites. It claims that an Occidental College shows proof that Barack Obama registered there as an undergraduate under the name “Barry Soetoro,” and as a foreign student. Aha! Here is the smoking gun proof, the posts declare, that Barack Obama is a foreigner, not an American, and not constitutionally fit to be our President!
An example of the short form of this story, posted April 22 2009, can be found at Anti-Jihad Resistance:
The Coalition for Freedom of Information referred to in this post is an amateur UFO research group which hasn’t issued any press releases since 2007. Its avowed research agenda regards interstellar travel, exobiology, extraterrestrial intelligence and “unidentified aerial phenomena,” not the character of Barack Obama’s college application.
Notice that the provided hyperlinks are for another right-wing website (which has nothing at all on this “story”) and two general web pages for Occidental College, neither of which has any information on this supposed document. No webpage at Occidental College provides this supposed information or even references the claim.
The long version of this claim has been posted around on right-wing websites that put it in the form of an Associated Press article:
AP- WASHINGTON D.C. – In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama’s qualifications for the presidency, the group “Americans for Freedom of Information” has released copies of President Obama’s college transcripts from Occidental College. Released today, the transcript indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship. This document would seem to provide the smoking gun that many of Obama’s detractors have been seeking.
The news has created a firestorm at the White House as the release casts increasing doubt about Obama’s legitimacy and qualification to serve as president. When reached for comment in London, where he has been in meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Obama smiled but refused comment on the issue. Meanwhile, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs scoffed at the report stating that this was obviously another attempt by a right-wing conservative group to discredit the president and undermine the administration’s efforts to move the country in a new direction.
Britain’s Daily Mail has also carried the story in a front-page article titled, “Obama Eligibility Questioned”, leading some to speculate that the story may overshadow economic issues on Obama’s first official visit to the U.K.
Over at Free Republic, they’re posting this “story” and praying, “LORD, GOD, PLEASE MULTIPLY THE SPREAD OF THIS INFO INTO EVERY EVEN PARTIALLY PATRIOTIC AMERICAN’S CONSCIOUSNESS, IN Your Name, Lord.”
But there is no such article at the Daily Mail, there is no record of Robert Gibbs making any such statement, there is no such group as the Americans for Freedom of Information, and finally, of course, there is no record of any such Associated Press story actually being written.
A prototype of this “story” appeared in January 2009 with the same contention that Barack Obama registered as “Barry Soetoro” as a freshman at Occidental College:
Even Occidental College states that Newsweek reported that Barry entered their college as BARRY SOETORO under his Indonesian passport and NOT as Barack Obama.
That’s a triple-indirect flip, if you’re into scoring referential gymnastics: a poster referring to Occidental College referring to Newsweek making a claim. Follow that link, of course, and you’ll see that Occidental College makes no such claim in the article. The most Occidental College says on that web page is that back in his college days, Barack Obama at first went by his nickname “Barry.” Horrors! Catastrophe appalling! But since the target audience of this “news story” is people who don’t actually check links and facts, it doesn’t matter that the factual claim is bogus. It has the form and appearance of truth, and so it will be repeated as truth. That’s the goal.
It’s all a hoax, and a pretty transparent one at that for anyone who pays attention. Yet for months now, in various forms, this “story” has been e-mailed and dittoed and posted and reposted all over the right-wing web. Why? For people who feel deep down in their gut that this uppity black man with an Arabic-sounding (but actually African) last name cannot possibly be a “real American,” falsehood rings more truly than the truth itself. Rather than abandon their bigotry and conspiracy theories about Islamofascist puppet government, they’ll hug the stinking lies tighter than they would their own mother. So yes, you can expect to see this completely false “breaking news” popping up over, and over, and over again, far into the future.

I saw an “article” posted about this today. I then got all excited and lost my mind. I sent copies to me 9-12, Liberation and other conservative friends. Someone asked me how reliable the source was on this (I am usually that person but alas, not this time). THEN, I went to my “go to fact-checker” for The rumormill that is the Internet, The Snopes Website famous for exposing the internet myths such as the poor little boy who wanted to collect business cards or stamps for his “give a wish” experience before he died.
Snopes says “It ain’t so” and that is good enough for me at least for now.

2. Back in 2008, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both declared early on that McCain’s birth certificate and eligibility for president was a non-issue.
3. Also in the spring of 2008, DEMOCRATS in the Senate introduced and passed a declaration in support of McCain’s eligibility to run for president. It passed the Senate by UNANIMOUS consent.

I just looked into getting a U.S. Passport and the requirement for ID states you must have a birth certificate with an “embossed, raised, stamped or multi colored seal” from the state of issuance. In other words, the “certification of live birth” Obama shows on the net would Not be acceptable even for a U.S. Passport application!!
I once had to send away to Connecticut for my Birth Certificate. It cost me $10. at the time and it came in a week. It had the date, the time, my weight, my parents name, address and occupation. It had the Physician who attended listed by name.
It came in a week and was beautifually embossed and stamped with the official state seal and signed by some official.
So…why can’t Obama do the same thing??????

Enlarging the “certificate of live birth,” I find that it was filled out on a form that would not be in existance for another 40 years! Enlarge the form, look at the lower left-hand corner, and you will see the form revision date “11-01.” The form in use up to 1968 was totally different. Time travel, anyone?

How many times do you morons need to be told? Hawaii disposed of paper records many years ago. A great many americans born in Hawaii no longer have their original birth certificate because they lost it and the paper record no longer exists. If you honestly believe Obama is an evil conspirator then you should also be asking that a large percentage of Hawaiians be detained/deported.
A) All existing evidence suggests that Obama is indeed American, but it is all cooked up by a widespread group of conspirators that includes people across a variety of private and public organizations. Oh, and the birth announcements in Hawaiian newspapers by Hawaii’s Department of Health are also part of that conspiracy.
B) Obama, like many Americans, lost the original copy of his birth certificate and had to go back to his birthplace to get whatever documentation they currently provide.
I, for one, moved across the country a couple years ago and had to get a new copy of my birth certificate to transfer my driver’s license. Suppose my birth state had switched to electronic records and no longer had the original copy…would you call for me to be detained/deported? Don’t you realize that such a policy would make many millions of americans ineligible for public office?

Searches of newspaper archives and electronic news databases shown that neither Britain’s Daily Mail nor any other major UK newspaper published a front-page article entitled “Obama Eligibility Questioned” in 2009, nor did any such newspaper published an article consisting of the text reproduced above. Barack Obama’s eligibility for the presidency was denied a hearing by the Supreme Court of New Jersey back in December 2008. It has not been taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court, as this hoax claims.

These discussions are fascinating. The birth announcement in the Local Hawaiian papers have been shown to be a fraud. No Obama has ever lived at the address listed. And to list the where about of Ann Dunham, Barry’s mother, in two weeks after giving birth she is listed as a student in WA. Normally would there not be recuperating time? But yet she has moved from Hawaii to WA in a very weak condition. This mystery is becoming more and more strange.

Listen up folks… The FACT that Soetoro has usurped the presidency while committing fraud against the people…while fighting tooth and nail to prevent the people from seeing his past, while the government and media are enabling his fraud, simply shows that a coup has taken place in this once great republic. However, the state of this nation is much worse that we perceive. The people are undone by their elected leaders who sold them out long ago. It matters not though since the “GOD” in heaven has weighed the tyrannical evil in the scales and has determind to free the people…his children…by installing a heavenly government to replace the evil human Satan led powers that are crushing all humanity. Maybe you have prayed for this to occur when you recited the prayer that asks: “…let your KINGDOM come, let your will be done, ON EARTH, as it is in heaven…” . This will be fullfilled when Revelation 21; verses three and four come to pass: “3 With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. 4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” Yes folks, these things will occur “ON EARTH” as God’s KINGDOM comes “TO EARTH”..to rule over earth as God’s tent is with mankind! Satan has control over the earth presently which is why the powers are so evil. The days of Satan’s rule are at an end and very shortly the armies from heaven will arrive to rescue us from the evil forces.

Despite the excuses, it HAS been proven that BO has spent upwards to 1 mil in legal fees to hide his docs. Why? Transparency my a$z! People have questions. BO is an elected official. He has an obligation. Snubbing his nose at those who want to know is unacceptable! It appears to me that his supporters have been duped. Ya know…it’s kinda like when you wanted to buy that really cool thing. And your entire family and all your friends told you that you were stupid for even considering it. But no, you had to do it anyway. And when the UPS dude delivered it, you realized you had just purchased a huge, gigantic baked turd. And when all your friends laughed and made fun of you, you defended your purchase nevertheless. You defended your decision because you couldn’t muster up the peanuts to admit that you SCREWED UP!! And that you should have listened to some common sense. And that you made one HUGE-az$ed mistake. And so are today’s Democrats. It really is pathetic after all!
You will not hear from me that Obama’s policies aren’t disappointments. But you’re leaving out John McCain and Sarah Palin, who would have done far worse.
As for your claim that it’s been proved that Obama spent a million bucks on legal fees to cover up a “real” birth certificate? Proven? Really? Fine. Show me a link to the primary source document proving this.
I won’t get that from you because no such document exists. There is no such proof. You’re either a liar or a dupe.
There are a lot of interesting articles online about Hawaiian birth certificates (that there were different forms with differing information, and children born out of state could use another form to register in Hawaii, but it produces the same kind of short form). I don’t know how many of those articles are factual, and how many are just around to wind people up.
What I do know is that someone should be responsible for making sure that the candidates for office are eligible for the office before they’re put on the ballot (whether it be the Supreme Court, or a politically balanced group of Representatives/Senators, or something like the CBO, that’s non-partisan). Several states had unqualified individuals on the ballot for president last round. There should be some sort of legal process to get on the ballot, including verification of all requirements, regardless of which party sponsors the candidate. And there should be a ruling on citizenship status specifically on Natural Born Citizen status. It’s in the Constitution, but it’s not defined by the Constitution, or the Supreme Court. If “Natural Born” means born to two US Citizens, then it should say so somewhere. If it just means someone who is not a naturalized citizen, then it should say that, too. It’s wrong that this issue was allowed to polarize the nation. The Supreme Court should have settled “Natural Born” thing once and for all.
This is a message for JIM. Stop wasting your breath trying to deny these claims. This has all blown over and they have moved on to other ridiculous and factless ways to distract our politicians from actually doing what we our taxes pay them to do. Maybe Obama IS a foreign national who has fooled us all and usurped the Presidency so he can destroy our country. Doesn’t matter to me. I dont see how that could be any worse than the last 8 years or the prospect of a Palin Administration. At least the Bush Administration embodied the true spirit of bi-partisanism by working collectively with Iraqis and Afghanis to destroy all three of our nations. For all of you xenophobes worried about the threat posed by foreign terrorists, take a long hard look back at the last decade and even the evidence here in this blog of our countries mentality change and then ask yourself who has done more damage to this country: Bin Laden or Bush?
