There’s a real doozy of a “news story” making the rounds through e-mails and on right-wing websites. It claims that an Occidental College shows proof that Barack Obama registered there as an undergraduate under the name “Barry Soetoro,” and as a foreign student. Aha! Here is the smoking gun proof, the posts declare, that Barack Obama is a foreigner, not an American, and not constitutionally fit to be our President!

The Coalition for Freedom of Information referred to in this post is an amateur UFO research group which hasn’t issued any press releases since 2007. Its avowed research agenda regards interstellar travel, exobiology, extraterrestrial intelligence and “unidentified aerial phenomena,” not the character of Barack Obama’s college application.
Notice that the provided hyperlinks are for another right-wing website (which has nothing at all on this “story”) and two general web pages for Occidental College, neither of which has any information on this supposed document. No webpage at Occidental College provides this supposed information or even references the claim.
The long version of this claim has been posted around on right-wing websites that put it in the form of an Associated Press article:
AP- WASHINGTON D.C. – In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama’s qualifications for the presidency, the group “Americans for Freedom of Information” has released copies of President Obama’s college transcripts from Occidental College. Released today, the transcript indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship. This document would seem to provide the smoking gun that many of Obama’s detractors have been seeking.
The news has created a firestorm at the White House as the release casts increasing doubt about Obama’s legitimacy and qualification to serve as president. When reached for comment in London, where he has been in meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Obama smiled but refused comment on the issue. Meanwhile, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs scoffed at the report stating that this was obviously another attempt by a right-wing conservative group to discredit the president and undermine the administration’s efforts to move the country in a new direction.
Britain’s Daily Mail has also carried the story in a front-page article titled, “Obama Eligibility Questioned”, leading some to speculate that the story may overshadow economic issues on Obama’s first official visit to the U.K.
Over at Free Republic, they’re posting this “story” and praying, “LORD, GOD, PLEASE MULTIPLY THE SPREAD OF THIS INFO INTO EVERY EVEN PARTIALLY PATRIOTIC AMERICAN’S CONSCIOUSNESS, IN Your Name, Lord.”
But there is no such article at the Daily Mail, there is no record of Robert Gibbs making any such statement, there is no such group as the Americans for Freedom of Information, and finally, of course, there is no record of any such Associated Press story actually being written.
A prototype of this “story” appeared in January 2009 with the same contention that Barack Obama registered as “Barry Soetoro” as a freshman at Occidental College:

That’s a triple-indirect flip, if you’re into scoring referential gymnastics: a poster referring to Occidental College referring to Newsweek making a claim. Follow that link, of course, and you’ll see that Occidental College makes no such claim in the article. The most Occidental College says on that web page is that back in his college days, Barack Obama at first went by his nickname “Barry.” Horrors! Catastrophe appalling! But since the target audience of this “news story” is people who don’t actually check links and facts, it doesn’t matter that the factual claim is bogus. It has the form and appearance of truth, and so it will be repeated as truth. That’s the goal.
It’s all a hoax, and a pretty transparent one at that for anyone who pays attention. Yet for months now, in various forms, this “story” has been e-mailed and dittoed and posted and reposted all over the right-wing web. Why? For people who feel deep down in their gut that this uppity black man with an Arabic-sounding (but actually African) last name cannot possibly be a “real American,” falsehood rings more truly than the truth itself. Rather than abandon their bigotry and conspiracy theories about Islamofascist puppet government, they’ll hug the stinking lies tighter than they would their own mother. So yes, you can expect to see this completely false “breaking news” popping up over, and over, and over again, far into the future.
Well I hope that if the Right keeps throwing spit balls that one will eventually stick. When Clinton denied his affair, the left was outraged about more vast right wing conspiracy, but there’s always the chance that something will end up sticking.

Also the fact that his Kenyan grandmother (the one that is performing a Muslim Hajj, which I read is required by the Quran) says she witnessed his birth in a Kenyan hospital and the fact that MicHELLe was recorded by the African Press International as to admitting he is NOT a natural born citizen would be an awful lot of proof. Why does everyone else living in America have to pass certain background checks in order to get a menial job, yet the MOST important job in America (the presidency) and its Constitutional requirements are overlooked just because the DemocRATS are in charge of Congress currently???!!! We just want him to be upheld to our Constitution’s requirements, as ALL the other presidents of our country have been. It’s THE law, you know??? I have personally listened to the audio of this “proof,” and all it is is a guy asking a load of leading questions and the person supposed to be Obama’s grandmother on the tape acting confused by the questions. The “grandmother” voice only says “Mombasa?” when the questioner says “Mombasa.” The audio then abruptly cuts out. If this means that “according to Barack. H. Obama’s Kenyan grandmother blah blah blah,” then I’m a dill pickle.
2. As “proof” of a conspiracy, the page asserts that “When asked, Barack H. Obama, Jr., et al claims he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii however, claims to have been born in two (2) separate hospitals.” You gotta love “et al,” because one of the “als” turns out later in the page to be an article in a HIGH SCHOOL NEWSPAPER. HOLY MOLY! I mean, golly, a high school newspaper said Barack Obama was born someplace different than where Obama himself says he was born. WOW! SHAZAM! We all know high school newspapers are great and reliable primary source documents, so ironclad that they are fit to be used as evidence of a conspiracy in a lawsuit. Oh, yes. The purpose is to create a reaction from Obama in the form of a lawsuit. To effectively prosecute a libel he would have to refute the claim. In your article, you attribute the release of Obama’s Occidental College transcript to an organization called Coalition For Freedom of Information, whereas the Associated Press article clearly states that the organization that released the information was AMERICANS For Freedom of Information.
If you google the wrong organization’s name, you’re going to get the wrong information. This destroys the entire premise of your article. What an amateurish job! It’s a good thing AP got their information right before they published their piece.

If a body of citizens question a president’s birth credentials, it would seem that the appropriate thing would be for the Supreme Court to settle this, not some website that is clearly not unbiased.

1)There is no provenance explaining where the “birth certificate” came from. In Hawaii, birth certificates aren’t publicly available and reporters’ requests for one have been ignored for months.
2)There is no explanation as to whom vouches for its origins or its authenticity.
3)The certificate number is blacked out. Why?
4)There are image artifacts consistent with forgeries and image processing. It’s not a real, unprocessed scan of a birth certificate.
5)It’s not certified. Hawaii state code provides that certificates issued by the department of health be certified:
“§338-13 Certified copies. (a) Subject to the requirements of sections 338-16, 338-17, and 338-18, the department of health shall, upon request, furnish to any applicant a certified copy of any certificate, or the contents of any certificate, or any part thereof. (b) Copies of the contents of any certificate on file in the department, certified by the department shall be considered for all purposes the same as the original,…”
This certificate is what the Hawaii DOH calls a “Late” Certificate of Birth, and it is not an original Birth Certificate for a birth recorded near the date of actual birth. In Hawaii, anyone can claim they were born there and submit the evidence years after the birth to obtain a late “Certificate of Birth”.

The Federal Government does not allow us to us a Certification of live birth as proof, we are required to have the person provide the State Certified Birth Certificate. WOW, his cronies even admit his dual citizenship- according to the Constituion he was ineligible to hold the Office of POTUS then, and NOW. But, Obama is a Constitutional lawyer which means that he knows, and has always known, that he is probably ineligible to hold the Office of POTUS, or that, at the very least, there is a strong Legal Argument that this is the case.
You don’t have to be a right-winger to wonder why on Earth does Obama not release his birth certificate and his college records. When people hide something there is usually something to hide — and Obama has pent almost $1M in attorney’s fee alone trying to avoide producing the records.

There is no reason to spend all this money and time preventing the production of documents and sealing his birth records unless they provide evidence that he is not a natural-born citizen, which is a Constitutional requirement. Yet Obama spends all this time fighting the demand to produce his records.
And this is coming from a man that promised accountability and transparency. If you can’t be transparent about where you were born, then what can you be transparent about?
The reason this story continues to bubble up is because we have not received credible, certifiable, verifiable truth from Obama. The birth certificate on the internet has been proven to be “photoshopped.” And he travels (ostensibly to his white grandmother’s deathbed) at just the time when the governor of HI decides to seal his records. And his children had never met their maternal great-grandmother — even though they were in HI at the time of her death.
Too many questions, too few answers. And until Obama comes forth with the genuine article, it will continue to be a question. In fact, not only would he ostensibly not be a natural-born citizen, but, based on the rules of citizenship, when his Indonesian stepfather adopted him, he became an Indonesian citizen. He travelled to Pakistan during his college years on an Indonesian passport. The rules of citizenship say that you must renounce foreign citizenship and swear allegiance to the USA by the age of 19 in order to be considered an American citizen. If he travelled on his Indonesian passport while in college, he was either using an improper document (as an American citizen, he was supposed to have an American passport), or he is lying now. Further, if this is all true, then not only is he not an American citizen, but an illegal alien as well, since he has not applied for legal status as a foreign-born resident of the US.
What a conundrum! The first black president is a fraud, but the corporate-owned MSM is silent and the Congress and even the USSC all would rather ignore their Constitutional duties than raise the issue.
And all he would have to do to kill this controversy once and for all is show the vault copy of his birth certificate.

It doesn’t matter which paper said what. What matters is that there is a sealed birth certificate that Obama refuses to release. Why? What is he hiding? Why create unnecessary controversy? Why not resolve the confusion and release evidence that proves there is no reason to question his citizenship?

I saw a video on youtube of Chavez and Obama speaking with one another and if the subtitles are accurate, Obama is saying something to the effect that he intends to legalize 20 million Hispanics & calls himself and Chavez as “Brothers in Socialism”. Is this real? 2. I get the same emails you all have seen & in one a statement was made that the President has appropriated over 20 million to assist Palestinan Refugees to relocate here in the US and also some of the detainees from Gitmo. They aren’t “subtitles,” since that would require audio of what Obama and Chavez are saying, and there isn’t any. The audio is entirely of a television correspondent giving her analysis. Unless you’re a genius for reading lips in profile, there is no way whatsoever to tell what Obama is saying. The text of the words aren’t even from the original newscast, even; they’re in an entirely different font than the newscast uses, and they don’t suffer from the same degredation of broadcast over the airwaves that the rest of the image suffers.
And come on, Barack Obama is going to use a phrase like “Brothers in Socialism?” It doesn’t even pass the sniff test.

There is an obvious, demonstrable difference between believing something to be a lie and knowing it to be a lie. Knowing is based on factual information. Believing is a result of cherry picking facts or just wishing something to be a lie. You can put this whole issue to rest by providing evidence that proves your argument. Substantiate your argument that this is a lie.
(And attempting to make this a racial issue is a failed attempt at distraction … not evidence. Those who use “the uppity black man” phrase accomplish nothing more than to reveal their own bigotry.) The assessment of his opposition as: bigoted, Bible-thumping, gun totin’, and ignorant extremists is 180 degrees off base. But this is one of a blizzard of unanswered, critical questions that swirls around the head of Obama … questions or issues he could have made disappear in a moment with simple disclosure of the requested – demonstrably factual – information.

Who says Barack Obama doesn’t have a birth certificate? He does. The very same form that the state of Hawaii requires (as one of a number of possible documents) to get a driver’s license, and the very same form required for a Passport has been produced by Barack Obama.
Don’t let emotion rule your ability to appreciate facts.

I have to say you are sadly incorrect sir. I work for a State Agengcy that has to verify a persons citizenship before any benefit can be issued. The Federal Government does not allow us to us a Certification of live birth as proof, we are required to have the person provide the State Certified Birth Certificate. So if the Feds require it from us, then why would a certificate of live birth be accepted for the President of the Untied States?
Please before you bloviate about the fact that he has provided something because you read something on line – you sound really stupid. If any citizen can sit back and watch what is happening to our country is not terrified about where our future is heading, there is something wrong with your judgement.
Stand up everyone and yell in one loud voice. Stop out of control government spending, create laws that are based on our constitution and punish anyone in congress that is caught taking bribs or kickbacks in exchange for votes that pass bills to forward a special interest group.
Oh, really? Then name the state agency that you work for. The specific state agency. You live in Wyoming and I’ll assume you work in Wyoming. In Wyoming, a certified copy of your birth certificate suffices for a federal passport application. And yeah, just as in Hawaii, that’s the only copy you can get.
Meanwhile, the very items the federal government demands for a passport application from a state certified copy of a birth certification of birth are present on the certified copies from the state of Hawaii.
Don’t believe me? Believe Vitalchek, a business that is part of the highly respected record-keeping company Lexis-Nexis and which processes passport applications. I quote from Vitalchek:

OK, here’s a link from the state of Hawaii Department of Health which says exactly the same thing: Hawaii Vital Records will issue only certified copies, not the originals, and they’re acceptable for passports and social benefits, for school entry and all that jazz you say they aren’t good for.

I’m a 64 year young AMERICAN citizen and I am outraged at how many American people have no idea what is going on in this country at this time. They are uninformed and more over, don’t really care. I ignored your “questions” because they’re loaded, mixing truths with suppositions and falsehoods in a way that are designed to trick a person into accepting the false premises. But you want an answer to your questions? Fine, here is my answer. There are three claims you are making:
1. That Barack Obama traveled to Pakistan during a period when U.S. citizens were prevented from doing so.
2. That Barack Obama had an Indonesian passport.
3. That Indonesia did not allow dual citizenship at the time.
My answer to the first question is that I do not know this to be the case, and that you have provided no evidence that it is the case. Please demonstrate through a link to an authoritative web site showing it to be true not just that “Citizen Obama traveled to Pakistan,” but that he did so “during a period when US citizens were prevented from doing so.” Also demonstrate that this prevention was legal in nature, and not trivial (ex. some guy, once, was turned back at the border), and then I’d be happy to investigate how this could have happened.
My answer to the second question is that, first, almost any question beginning with the words “Could it be…” is granted automatic bullshit status. Could it be that I am the Second Incarnation of Abraham Lincoln? Could it be that I have a secret laser pistol behind my back where you can’t see it? You must answer “YES!” Second, I do not know of the existence of an “Indonesian Passport” of Barack Obama’s. Demonstrate that it exists via a link to an authoritative web site showing that it (not Maya Soetoro-Ng’s cousin’s housekeeper’s ‘recollection’ of the time that Stanley Ann Dunham called from the kitchen, “Oh, Barack Obama, my definitely Indonesian citizen son, could you come here and help your fully-integrated-into-Jakartan-society Mom put away the dishes?”) exists.
My answer to the third question is that I have no idea whether it’s true or not. If you’re interested in convincing me of something, why don’t you cite the specific Indonesian law of the time for me? Please provide a hyperlink to that law so that I can evaluate it myself.

Let me first say that Obama should be obligated, by the courts if necessary, to release such information as his “long” birth certificate, his passport, his school records, or any other records that have been brought into this discussion. As noted earlier, HE has the burden of proof to satisfy such reasonable claims as to his eligibility to hold the office of the President of the United States. There is absolutely no good reason in the world that he should not be making these records public knowledge…NONE. That is, unless there is something to hide of course.
With that being said, it does us all a disservice to base accusations on misinformation or lies. It muddies the waters and makes the entire argument seem like a lunatics rant. Obama, by his own admission traveled to Pakistan in the early 80’s. His staff placed him there in the year 1981. However, it needs to be clearly stated, there was NOT a ban on travel for American citizens in 1981. This is a flat out untruth that has been propagated on the internet. This so called fact has not ounce of truth to it.

This does not change the fact that I believe it is perfectly reasonable to ask Obama to produce his passport for further fact checking but basing an argument or accusation on a flat non-truth is wrong. Spreading such lies and misinformation and worst yet basing an argument on them makes it easy for others to take the entire argument with a grain of salt.
I don’t know if this is true or not but is it not interesting to everyone that Obama is the first presidential canidate and know President who has sealed all of his collegge records and he will not release any of this infromation and does it not seem odd that Obama who in his own book, claims to have had no money, ends up at Occidental collegge then Columbia collegge and then attends Harved, on who’s money and how??(especially, considering again in his own words, he did not get that good of grades) And next, how did Obama again in his own book with his words, pay for his trip to Pakistan when he was attending Collegge? Does these and other questions not raise at least some questions and if they do, why has their never been any feedback from Obama or his handlers!! why seal the records? just ask yourself these questions and maybe then, one might be open to consider the possablities.
