Maine Green Party Wins Elections

Jim has joked about the relative success of the Green Party of Maine (officially the Maine Green Independent Party). Actually, it’s no joke. As mentioned by Peregrin, Green Party candidates for the City Charter Commission in Portland, Maine had their election this week, and two out of three won.

Ben Chipman and Anna Trevorrow were the Green Party victors, but there’s a positive story in the votes for the Green Party’s other candidate too. Dan Jenkins lost, but with a very healthy percent of the vote: 45.49

This is a Green Party interview.

    Bring the Guard Home.
I liked this interview. The States either have to find a way to get control of their Guard from the president or just defund the National Guard altogether if that’s not a possibility.

You might appreciate the Green Party’s emphasis on decentralization. It’s one of the party’s “10 Key Values”:

“Centralization of wealth and power contributes to social and economic injustice, environmental destruction, and militarization. Therefore, we support a restructuring of social, political and economic institutions away from a system which is controlled by and mostly benefits the powerful few, to a democratic, less bureaucratic system. Decision-making should, as much as possible, remain at the individual and local level, while assuring that civil rights are protected for all citizens”

As for myself, I’m not sure how I feel about this focus – issues of liberty and equality can be damaged when local and state government are emphasized.
