Is A Week Forgotten Really A Week? Ask a School Psychologist

Yesterday morning, the House of Representatives considered and passed H. Res. 700, a bill to recognize this upcoming week as National School Psychology Week. Every member of the House of Representatives voted for the resolution except for Ron Paul, who probably voted no because the constitution doesn’t specifically mention school psychologists.

Yet there is no mention of this congressional accomplishment in any newspaper in the country this morning, nor is there any independent mention of this School Psychology Week getting set to be celebrated. Is it really a Week when next to nobody knows it?

P.S. In anticipation of a wave of “How dare you, my son Johnny had ADD and without the help of my school psychologist, you heartless…” comments, let me clarify for those reading between the lines. I am not writing this to knock school psychologists. I’m writing this to knock the proliferation of bills creating and commemorating this Day and that Week and the other Month to seemingly little effect. I’m writing this to knock the industry of nonprofit association professional administrators who, in seeking to find an easy metric by which to judge “success” in their work, spend a lot of time getting people organized to get toothless symbolic resolutions passed by city councils, state houses and Congress. School psychologists, on the other hand, do quiet, difficult and important work every day. For resources relating to school psychology, click here.
