In 2008, Barack Obama promised change. This week, he had an easy opportunity to demonstrate the change he keeps saying that he stands for. Instead, Obama chose more of the same. He chose to continue a generations-long policy of denial.
Like every President since Harry S. Truman, Barack Obama was invited to visit the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which the United States destroyed in the only nuclear weapons attack ever in human history. Like every President since Harry S. Truman, Barack Obama refused the invitation.
It wouldn’t have been difficult for President Obama to go. He’s visiting Japan today anyway. A flight of less than an hour, and he could have been there. Obama had the time.
What Obama didn’t have was the courage to confront the American responsibility for nearly 70 years of a world living under the threat of nuclear weapons. What Obama didn’t have was the courage for real change.
It seems that giving Obama a Nobel Peace Prize in the hopes that it will encourage him to make bold moves later is a strategy that didn’t work.
You’re so right – this news IS unfit to print!
dropping those bombs was a terribly hard choice to make and many people felt great sorrow for the innocent citizens who were hurt and killed, but it was the only way to end a terrible conflict quickly and therefore save thousands of American lives. The enemy would have done the same thing if they could – fortunately, they didn’t get past Pearl Harbor. The fact that we are no longer enemies does not change the situation that existed then.
Can you provide evidence that “it was the only way” to end the war – to drop two nuclear bombs on cities filled with civilians? You want it to have been the only way, because that makes you feel better.
If what you think the enemy might have done, in some kind of strange parallel universe where the facts were entirely different, justifies our own actions, then any kind of war crime is justified.
Okay, revisionist historians talking STUPID again….
Hiroshima was a Military manufacturing and mustering center. That made it a MILITARY target. Nagasaki was a Naval Fleet Command Center for Pacific Operations…a MILITARY target. Don’t give me that bullshit of it was just civilians. The scope of the blast was tested at White Sands but their effects on civilans and surrounding areas was untested due to the fact that they could not tip their hands revealing the Manhattan Project. Kind of hard to hide a Nuke blast more than once.
And yes, it was taken into account to save AMERICAN lives. We were at war with Japan for more than just a couple of months. So whatever it took to defeat the Japanese and end the conflict was the main thrust.
So stop tacking on TODAYS morals on those of 60 Years ago and saying that they should have done things different. That just should ineptness in undertstanding how history is taught, interpreted and is passed on.
Obama is shit
What an interesting idea! Let’s see… when I sit down on a toilet, does Obama come out?
When I need the fields to be more fertile for my crops, does adding Obama help?
Is Obama in every house of the nation?
Do babies not know how to hold back Obama?
Why, the things we learn every day.
No, it goes like this…”I gotta take an Obama, and wipe my Reid with some Pelosi….” but it’s better than…”I gotta take a Holder and make sure I shake my Clinton so I don’t drip…”
