“It’s better than Disneyland!” — Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, describing the joys of offshore oil drilling in a hearing today.
Do the emaciated dolphins get a water slide?
Seriously, I believe that Senator Murkowski is correct when she declares that offshore oil drilling is better than Disneyland. For her, it’s true. Open Secrets reveals that over her Senate career, Lisa Murkowski has received $363,063 in payments from the oil industry. A one-day ticket to Disneyland, on the other hand, costs $72. Murkowski could spend 5,043 days — that’s nearly 14 straight years — in Disneyland with the money she’s been handed by Big Oil. Every day Murkowski has been in the Senate, she’s been handed nearly three days’ worth of Disneylands by oil corporations. So heck, yeah, offshore oil drilling is loads better than Disneyland if you’re Lisa Murkowski.
Given that Lisa Murkowski has received tens of thousands of dollars a piece from several offshore drilling and other fossil fuel industry corporations, and Disneyland hasn’t given her any money, it’s no wonder that Senator Murkowski thinks offshore drilling is better than Disneyland.

Good point. Let me pull out my li’l calculator and figure out just how much better than Disneyland offshore oil drilling is for Senator Lisa Murkowski… I’ll add it in to the post.
It’s really not the figure so much as it is the lack of ethics. She is SUPPOSED to be a public servant; a legislator is supposed to lead an exemplary life – to be an example of humility with power, dignified, clear-headed, big hearted, out there for her constituents.
Instead capitalism has corrupted the process so that she is actually groomed for the job of serving her corporate masters – weeded out via survival of the fittest. She gets money in her campaign “war chest” and backing by those whose services she represents at the expense of her constituents for a guaranteed big-figure future. She’s been “bought” like many of our policy makers (Timmy Geithner and his buddies from Goldman Sachs over at Treasury and the Fed come to mind immediately).
It’s America in name only. The actual country has been hi-jacked by vested interest groups and the rest is just a show (except for the part where they’re spying on us, crushing us under mountains of debt, and fleecing us and the environment for everything of value – which curiously no one seems to care about). Now that about 1 in 5 of us is unemployed or underemployed it’s starting to sink in that they mean business. The fact that we keep paying our taxes to this zombie America is astounding.
They aren’t responding to us, i think it’s only fair that we stop responding to them – if we stop paying our taxes they will pay attention. “Shut off the tap” to lead the way to recovery.
Tom, I couldn’t had said it better. You could have gone on and on but chose to be succinct and concise. Just perfect.
Marita, the last thing we need is silence, or sarcasm in lieu of substance.
