Tonight, President Barack Obama, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, is set to announce that he will escalate the American military occupation of Afghanistan, sending 30,000 additional American soldiers over to Afghanistan, and working with leaders of other nations to secure yet more soldiers to support the occupation.
About 40 protests against Obama’s plan to escalate the Afghanistan conflict have been planned and registered with United for Peace and Justice for the beginning of this week. A few of the rallies took place yesterday, like the one in Phoenix organized by the Arizona Alliance for Peace and Justice. Other protests will take place today, such as the gathering outside the White House in Washington D.C. at 5:00 PM. Most of the listed protests, however, are planned for tomorrow, in the wake of Obama’s announcement.
Of course, many protests aren’t registered with United for Peace and Justice at all. Check with your local anti-war organization for details.
Maybe when Obama said he’d get the troops out, he meant that he’d take them out of Iraq and put them into Afghanistan.
He’ll be a one-term president, to be replaced by another “chicken hawk” who’ll claim war is the way to financial prosperity and peace. He’s losing his base of progressives and ordinary folk who are seeing him NOT delivering on his campaign promises and making their lives no better (and considerably worse) – exposing him as no better than any other politician (when we had such HOPE for the guy) – just another lying sack of shit corporate whore.
Man, that’s one heck of a mixed metaphor. Must…remove…from…brain.
I actually don’t think he’ll be a one-termer; while Obama has been disappointing in his delivery of policy, Republicans are still actually worse in that regard.
I gladly voted for Obama and have been quite disappointed. At this point I don’t see myself voting for either party’s candidate for prez in 2012 unless the Dem’s manage to run someone on the order of Kucinich or Nader (not likely) to end war and truly change course. For Obama to regain support he would not only have to reverse course and meet his campaign promises but also show how his foot-dragging, compromising strategy has wreaked havoc on the Republican machine.
