New York State Democrats Kill Marriage Equality

Today, the New York State Senate voted to defeat legislation providing equal rights to marry for all couples, heterosexual and homosexual. Yes, Republicans voted against the bill, but Republicans are a minority in the New York State Senate.

The problem is with New York’s right wing Democrats. The Democratic Party of New York, like the Democratic Party nationwide, has sought cheap and easy victories by recruiting regressive political candidates who favor the Republican agenda but are willing to run as Democrats in order to gain power. Now we’re seeing the consequence. These Democrats are voting with Republicans, so that even when Republicans are in the minority, it’s the Republicans that control the legislative process.

Progressive New Yorkers need to decide whether they’re willing to allow right wing, anti-equality Democrats to continue to run roughshod over their ideals. If not, they need to get organized, and run primaries against the nasty, Republican-lite Democrats in the New York State Senate who voted against progressive values today.

The Democratic New York state senators who turned coat to vote and join the Republicans today were:

Joseph Addabbo
Darrel Aubertine
Ruben Diaz
Shirley Huntley
Carl Kruger
Hiram Monserrate
George Onorato
William Stachowski

Spread the word to every Democrat you know on the following action items:

- Don’t donate to these Democrats
- Withhold donations to the New York State Democratic Committee as well, until these right wing Democrats are replaced with genuine progressives
- Donate to any and all progressive Democratic primary challengers against these bigoted Democrats in the 2010 elections

Though disappointed, the unfortunate thing is that some of the Dems were not turn coats. We knew where they stand and in the case of some, I respect that they say what they believe and did not try to stop this vote, like Aubertine and Stachowski. Diaz didn’t turn coat, but he made this the foundation of his political existence which is disgusting.

I’m most upset with Kruger, Monserrate, and Republicans Bonacic, Alesi, Betty Little and others who made it seem they would vote for it, but fear of being labeled a RINO after that jerk Doug Hoffman

Have you heard about Ted Olson’s suit that he wants to bring before the S.C.?

    Whatever happened to that.
