If I hear the phrase Massachusetts liberal this morning, I’m going to crack. In yesterday’s Democratic primary for the special election for Edward Kennedy’s seat in the United States Senate, Martha Coakley won by a margin of almost 20 percent.
In a debate last week, Martha Coakley was the only one of four candidates in the race who refused to support repealing the Patriot Act. Prior to that, Coakley had spoken repeatedly in defense of the widespread spying against law abiding Americans that’s taken place through Patriot Act powers. Coakley’s main rival, Congressman Mike Capuano, was one of the few members of the House of Representatives who had the integrity to vote against the Patriot Act when it was first passed.
There are a lot of ideas that can fit under the category of liberal. Support for the Patriot Act’s Big Brother spying by our government is not one of them.
