Washington D.C. Approves Marriage Equality

The Washington D.C. City Council voted in favor of the legalization of same-sex marriage in the District of Columbia today. The vote was 11 to 2.

To achieve final legal status, the legislation now needs to be signed by the Mayor, who has expressed support. There will then follow a 30-day period of review by the U.S. Congress. In order for the legislation to be blocked, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate would need to pass bills reversing the D.C. Council’s action, and then President Barack Obama would need to sign his own name to the reversal.

I have been severely disappointed in Barack Obama and the congressional Democrats’ neglect and sometime antipathy to non-heterosexual Americans. However, even in my disappointment, I cannot believe that the bigots of Washington D.C., Democrat or Republican, will be able to muster the venom to deny equality to all loving couples in our nation’s capital city.

Marriage is about love AND sacrifice for the GOOD of the other person. Sadly, gays will find out that this will not make them any more happy, just shorten their lives.

…then why do gays have a higher suicide rate than straights?
