Name Your Post Office

The House of Representatives was busy yesterday. Investigating and ending abuses against our constitutional rights that began under George W. Bush but continue today? No. Ending Don’t Ask Don’t Tell? No. Passing legislation to ban the importation of products made through slavery and other coercive forms of labor? Golly no.

The House of Representatives prepared 8 separate bills renaming post offices in the honor of people like Jodie Bailey, Louis Allen and Paul McCleery. Who are these people? That’s what people who frequent the post offices to be given these names would be wondering – if they noticed at all.

You can hardly find a day when the House of Representatives isn’t in session without U.S. Representatives introducing bills to rename post offices after people. It’s an easy way for politicians to gain a little bit of approval from small numbers of constituents.

Do these renamings have any impact, though? Does anyone notice when their post office is renamed?

Do you know the person your own post office is named after?
