Down in Florida, the Fish and Wildlife Commission brings us the bad news of more manatee fatalities last year than ever before recorded – 429 dead manatees found in state waters.
Manatees are part of a group of marine mammals called the sirenians. These animals have blunt front flippers, but no hind legs remaining, with a large tail propelling them forward in the water instead. Florida’s manatees are endangered animals, so the death of 429 in just one year is a serious loss.
