Miniscule Oil Spill Control Efforts In The Gulf

Yes, the sunken, burnt out hull of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig is leaking out crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico at an alarming rate, but we’re told not to worry. BP America assures us that they are engaging in serious efforts to contain the growing oil slick, now at over 1,000 square miles.

What do those efforts look like? Here’s a photograph of the oil spill as it appeared yesterday, photographed by NASA.

The photograph shows the emergency response boats that are working to contain the spill too.

What, you can’t see them? Look closer. They’re in the portion of the photograph that’s indicated by the red square.

We can zoom into that part of the photograph with the second photograph, that you see below. That photograph just shows one edge of the oil spill. That’s the picture where you can see two ships, working to contain the oil spill.

Have trouble making them out? They’re the two little blips, highlighted by the yellow circles, next to the huge oil slick.

Those ships are going to contain the oil spill? Sure, like a pair of toothpicks stuck in your hair will keep you dry from the rain.

BP executives have promised that they will do “everything in our power to contain this oil spill.” Do you think this photograph shows everything BP has in its power?

    Just curious,
what is the item in the water just below the “n” in “fighting”?

  2. Green Man says:

Good question. NASA has not indicated what that is. There was another oil platform close by that has been abandoned, discussed in the news, but I’m not sure that’s what that blip is.

Over 1,000 barrels per day exiting the pipe on the bottom of the sea. Not a huge amount, but could decimate the oyster industry on the NO coast. Another man-made disaster on the Gulf Coast. This type of spill will spread through the entire water column, not just on the surface. I predict that this will be a major ecological disaster, almost as big as the election (appointment?) of George W. Bush.

Correction: This photograph was actually taken TWO days ago – on Sunday. The oil slick is even bigger, and closer to shore, by now.

BP is controlling this oil spill like a chihuahua herds elephants.

This whole thing is so upsetting to me. These big fuc*ing companies just continue to pollute our resources and everyonr just sits around and shrugs their shoulders with just a slap on the wrist for BP. Sorry dead animals and fisherman. You’re S.O.L. Im sooo pissed & dissapointed. Will me letter to Obama really make a difference??? What will????
