BP Big Box Fails To Stop Oil Spill

Over the last week and a half, Americans have been reassured that the worst of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill would soon be over. BP was going to lower a huge box over the site of one of the offshore drilling ruptures, we were told, and oil would simply be funneled up to the surface.

Now, it seems that the big box will merely probably become just another piece of oil industry junk on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. BP is dumping its big box there after it failed to stop the rupture of crude oil from the Deepwater Horizon drill site. The problem was due to methane hydrates, a kind of ice-methane lattice that commonly forms in high pressures underwater near oil deposits.

Now, what I just said was that BP’s big box failed. BP contests this assertion. BP’s Chief Operating Officer says, “I wouldn’t say it’s failed yet…” but that the big box simply “didn’t work”. See the difference?

The people at BP are making up plans as they go along. The oil industry doesn’t know how to stop the rupture of oil from the floor of the Gulf of Mexico, any more than it knew how to stop the fire on the Deepwater Horizon.

If the oil industry doesn’t know how to deal with offshore drilling problems, why on earth should our country allow more offshore drilling rigs to be put in place up and down our coastlines?

Take action: Call your U.S. Representative through the congressional switchboard at 202-224-3121 and urge your Representative to cosponsor the No New Drilling Act, H.R. 5248.

Do you think magnets would plug the leak?

  2. Junga says:

The point is, I think, that even BP doesn’t know how to plug the leak, and didn’t know how before the blowout began.

We were drilling, drilling, drilling, without any known way of dealing with the problem! Absurd.

Do you think magnets would plug the hole and do you think you could use a firemen’s hose to funnel the oil in the meantime?

I was so proud to life in Florida, but I dont see myself here after this oil spill. Is allready hitting the keys, have you been at the keys?
I am looking for free anti BP stickers, anybody?

Instead of trying to stick things in the hole against the pressure why wouldn’t they work above the pressure. Use a French gullatine type mechanism to cut it off or at least slow the pressure enough to be able to plug the hole.
