If you’re in Washington D.C. this Friday, there’s a protest you can join outside of BP’s Washington headquarters at 1101 New York Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. The protest starts at high noon, and is being organized by Public Citizen.
If you’re not in Washington D.C., here’s what you can do to help: Don’t go to Washington D.C. to join the protest! Burning gasoline over a long distance to get to a protest against the abuses of fossil fuel companies doesn’t make sense.
Remember – the problem isn’t one that’s peculiar to BP. It’s an industry-wide problem of risky offshore drilling that puts our American shoreline in danger. So, the number one best thing you can do to help solve the problem is to reduce your consumption of products made from petroleum, and that includes not only gasoline but many other things, such as plastic and even dish detergent.
If you want to take an extra step, call your U.S. Representative and urge him or her to co-sponsor the No New Drilling Act, H.R. 5248, which would restore the moratorium on new offshore drilling.
For a moment, take money out of the equation. Because let’a face it, when you’re on your death bed of cancer or who knows what, you don’t think about all those bills in your wallet or how much money is sitting in a bank. You think about people who’ve been so special, fun vacations shared with friends,…etc. So I don’t give a hooey about how BP investors are ‘suffering’ – washing up on the beach covered in oil and chemicals only to die is much more serious. Ruining our beaches, our lives, … they talk about “cleaning it up??” How can you clean up what’s become extinct? This problem IS global, it will spread to oceans all over the globe and the priority of money trumping life is something I just can’t fathom. Outrage doesn’t even begin to descibe the way I’m feeling.
