On September 23 2009, the U.S. Senate voted to reject legislation by Senator David Vitter which would have forced the federal government to allow offshore oil drilling to proceed, even if environmental or safety concerns arose. 42 U.S. Senators voted for Vitter’s idea. In the wake of the Montara oil spill in Indonesia and the BP Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico, their names should be noted:
