What Makes It Not Folk Music?

August 4th, 2010 | Posted by Rowan in Media | Questions

Louis Armstrong, who was born 109 years ago today, once commented, “All music is folk music. I ain’t never heard a horse sing a song.”

He was making a joke, but he was also trying to make a point.

Still, there’s a lot of music that’s awfully difficult to connect to “folks”. Is the theme music of “Grey’s Anatomy” folk music? Is Alejandro by Lady Gaga folk music?

If you don’t think so, what makes the difference?
