Oil and Blood Catch Fire

An attack by the Taliban has given new depth to the anti-war slogan No Blood For Oil. It was oil that brought American soldiers into Saudi Arabia and kept them there for years in the fight to control Iraq. That presence was what sparked the hatred of Osama Bin Laden, leading eventually to the longest war in American history, still being played out in Afghanistan.

Under Barack Obama, the war in Afghanistan has begun to bleed over into Pakistan. That’s where, this week, American oil tankers have been under attack. This morning, 28 or 29 American oil tankers burned to a crisp in the Pakistani province of Baluchistan. The tankers were headed to Afghanistan to fuel America’s machines of war.

This war has its roots in oil, and it runs on oil too. Now, American dreams for victory in the Afghanistan war are burning on oil.
