Have you heard the one about how the big bad union machines control everything in our political system?
Take a look at the share of independent expenditures on political campaigns that came from unions in the week of September 26 – October 2, 2010:

2% is not exactly an overwhelming share. Just one business organization, the National Association of Realtors, outspent unions by a factor of four. The American Crossroads Republican front group built by Karl Rove? It spent three times as much as the unions did.
Just putting the “big bad union political machine” talk in perspective. This year, the union contribution is small peanuts.
