Bernard Sanders For President 2012 Campaign Postcards

Unlike Barack Obama, who tells us that a plan that gives tax cuts to billionaires and throws must of the tax cut savings to people making over a million dollars every year, Senator Bernie Sanders is willing to be honest with the American people about the way that taxes really work in America.

Sanders says the plain truth, that it’s corporations that refuse to pay their fair share that are leading this country into bankruptcy. While Barack Obama targets federal workers with a wage freeze, Senator Sanders is going after Big Oil. In his filibuster on Friday, Sanders noted,

“ExxonMobil has historically been the most profitable corporation in the history of the world. Last year, ExxonMobil had, for them, a very bad year. They only made $19 billion in profit. Based on $19 billion, you might be surprised to know ExxonMobil not only paid nothing in taxes, they got a $156 million return from the IRS. How is that?

For those of you who are working in an office, working in a factory, earning your $30,000, $40,000, $50,000, $60,000 a year, you pay taxes, but if you are ExxonMobil, and you made $19 billion in profits last year, not only did you not pay any taxes this year, you got $156 million in return.”

Barack Obama and his Republican allies don’t do a single thing to close this tax loophole in their plan. Yet, they’re saying that we’re going to have to take less in the Social Security benefits that we’ve worked toward for years. They’re saying we’re going to have to accept sacrifices in reduced government services.

What about ExxonMobil? Barack Obama and his Republican friends won’t talk about any sacrifices ExxonMobil and other fossil fuel corporations will have to make. They’re allowing those corporations to get off scott free with huge tax breaks while the national debt swells to monstrous proportions.

Sanders made it plain on Friday what Barack Obama and the Republicans are allowing to happen in this country. We’re getting ripped off by the corporations who hold the purse strings for politicians in national government. Sanders said, “it makes no sense to us to be giving huge tax breaks to the richest people in this country–literally millionaires and billionaires–and driving up the national debt so our kids can pay more in taxes in order to pay off that debt. This is a transfer of wealth. It is Robin Hood in reverse.”

That statement by Sanders, by the way, is featured on a new set of campaign postcards designed for the growing grassroots movement to support Bernard Sanders for President in 2012. It’s not enough to just sit there and moan that Barack Obama isn’t the kind of President you wanted him to be. You’ve got to stand up and do something to find a better alternative. Sending out these postcards to promote the idea of Sanders for President 2012 is one way to help that process move forward.

Bernard Sanders is willing to talk about the basic economic truths that Barack Obama won’t dare touch. That’s just one reason that Bernie Sanders makes a much better presidential candidate for 2012 than Barack Obama could ever be.
