Poor old Senator Thune. 2012, he hoped, was going to be his year, the year that he ran for President, with his devastating political base of South Dakota supporters… No, it never really was a good idea, but John Thune has been suggesting he’d start a presidential campaign for months. Those suggestions came to an end yesterday, in an awkward statement in which Thune declared he would not run for President, but without ever even using the words “President”, “campaign”, or “White House”.
Thune wrote, “There is a battle to be waged over what kind of country we are going to leave our children and grandchildren and that battle is happening now in Washington, not two years from now. So at this time, I feel that I am best positioned to fight for America’s future here in the trenches of the United States Senate.”
Here at Irregular Times, we’ve been preparing a set of campaign gear for the 2012 presidential campaign, focusing on those candidates who really seem to have the best shot at the White House. So, we had prepared, oh, about three or four items expressing opposition to a John Thune for President campaign – just in case, you know. Among those items is this bumper sticker you see below: John Thune is an Ultramaroon.
As Senator Thune suggests that he wants to turn the U.S. Senate into a battlefield, fighting for his political agenda, we’ll keep a few of our anti-Thune items online – including the Ultramaroon bumper sticker. Why? Well, Thune is still an ultramaroon. He’s just a Senate ultramaroon instead of a presidential candidate ultramaroon.
An ultramaroon in the U.S. Senate can cause a lot of damage. Consider what Senator Thune did back in 2002, for example, when he voted to help George W. Bush start the war in Iraq. Thune was also a big ultramaroon when he took part in the attack against Social Security a few years ago, trying to divert the Social Security trust fund into Wall Street bank accounts, just months before the stock market took a dive.
This year, Thune continues his great tradition of ultramaroon politics with a push to pass S. 228, a bizarre piece of legislation that acknowledges that human produced greenhouse gases are causing global warming – but then forbids the government from doing anything to confront the problem. Also in the ultramaroon category is S. 91, the Life at Conception Act, which seeks to give full legal rights to fertilized eggs. Thune supports this zygote equality legislation.
Then there’s Senator Thune’s vote to extend the most abusive spy powers established under the Patriot Act. I’m sorry to say that I can’t place this vote in the ultramaroon category, because support for an unconstitutional security state has become all too conventional among Washington D.C. politicians. No, Thune’s support for the Patriot Act’s big government surveillance against the American people is just plain creepy.
I don’t think it’s human caused, but even if it is I don’t support any government spending or regulations.
qs, you really should think before you espouse that kind of rhettoric.
qs, you say you “don’t think” global warming is human caused, as if it’s a matter of opinion, like whether a hamburger tastes good or not. This isn’t a matter of opinion. It’s a matter of a huge complex of scientific hypotheses that have been tested and restested over more than a generation, showing with remarkable reliability that global warming is caused in large part by human activity.
You know what? Not only does it not matter what we humans think about this – the earth is going to do what it has to do by reacting to all the chemicals (including the “greenhouse” gases) we’re dumping all over the planet – the result is going to be the same: we’re causing our own extinction!
If you want a good explanation for where we’re headed, qs, read this: (it’s not long)

I don’t support even having a government though let alone taxes, a military, regulations etc so whether or not it’s human caused or natural doesn’t even matter.
So, then, you don’t support democracy? You can’t have democracy unless you have government.
Even if you don’t want government action, knowing that human activities are the largest cause of global warming is important, because we as individuals can take action to reduce our contribution to greenhouse gases. Surely, you understand that.
