August 2011: 4th hottest over all the globe, 2nd hottest over land

NASA’s global temperature data have been released for August 2011, and the results show a continuation in the global warming trend: August 2011 was the 4th hottest August on record over land and sea, and 2nd hottest on record over land.

Let’s place those temperature readings in climate context.  The following are the Top 10 Hottest Augusts in the record stretching back to 1880:
