The human world population this morning is 6 billion, 921 million, 242 thousand. One month from now, the Planet Earth will be home to 7 billion people.
The Center for Biological Diversity is not just observing this occasion. It’s encouraging Americans to create events to construct and communicate meaning about the problem of overpopulation.
What kind of themes would go into these events? The expected date of the 7 billionth living human inhabitant of our planet is Halloween, so a trick or treat theme is immediately tempting, but may not be thematically appropriate.
World Overpopulation Awareness is also promoting October 31 as the day of 7 billion. World of 7 Billion has sponsored a video contest, and is providing educational materials to school teachers.
Actually solving the overpopulation problem is more tricky. Awareness events can’t seem to overcome the basic physiological fact that people hunger to make more people.
