Wisconsin Democrats Voted To Let Coal Companies Play Loose With Toxic Coal Ash

Happy Halloween, Lake Michigan.

Yesterday, as children in Milwaukee were preparing to go trick or treating in nearby neighborhoods, a mudslide at the Oak Creek Power Plant operated by WE Energies released a large amount of toxic coal ash containing poisonous heavy metals into Lake Michigan.

Just 17 days before, every single member of the U.S. House of Representatives voted for the Coal Residuals Reuse and Management Act, a bill written to allow coal companies to continue storing coal ash in dangerous conditions, free of strict regulations.

We expect Republicans in Congress to disregard public safety, going on anti-regulation crusades without thought of the consequences. It is more disappointing to see that every Democrat in the U.S. House from Wisconsin voted along with the Republicans to block strong regulation of coal ash disposal.

Tammy Baldwin, Gwen Moore, and Ron Kind voted to block protections from unsafe coal ash disposal. Now, toxic coal ash has spilled in their own back yards. How are they going to explain that to their constituents?
