Washington, DC has the 2nd highest average income among its richest 20% of all of America’s 50 largest cities. But the income of DC’s poorest 20% is far below the 50-largest-city average. The capital city of the United States of America is place of sky-high income inequality.
So finds the DC Fiscal Policy Institute in its new report. Take a look.
The DC Fiscal Policy Institute report doesn’t mention one of the key elements of the problem: disparity among racial and ethnic groups. Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans are second class citizens in the U.S. I believe in the District of Columbia, the percentage of Blacks is far greater than the other two groups. American has lost its commitment to correcting income and wealth disparity based on racial/ethnic identity. Affirmative action is nearly ended. I hope this is only temporary.
Resolving the racial/ethnic problem would probably leave in place forces that contribute to unaccepably high income inequality even among Whites. As long as Obama and the Democrats and Republicans remain in power, little will be done about this problem, either.
