Judging by global search trends, the Occupy Movement is not bigger than Jesus, but for a time it was bigger than Lady Gaga: But in the news Occupy was definitely bigger than Jesus this summer and fall, at least until …

Time To Curb The Rampant Spirituality Of Christmas

http://irregulartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/bestthingssign.jpg

When it’s time to pass the collection plate, spirituality suddenly doesn’t mind materialism so much. The spiritual organizations, too, will perish if all they get from their members is a smile and the repetition of a careworn story about a baby born in a barn.

Pope Ratzinger And The Glitter Of The Christmas Season

This is the man who presumes to lecture the rest of the world about our need to see past the glitter? Has he looked in the mirror lately?

Warped Ark Encounter Coming Unpegged In Kentucky

http://irregulartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/arkpark.jpg

Ken Ham seems to have forgotten something crucial about the myth of Noah’s Ark. In the ancient allegory, the ark was not a successful symbol of salvation. The ark failed to communicate the promise of salvation. Nobody took it seriously. Noah’s Ark is Christianity’s great legend of a divinely inept public relations campaign.

Putting the Christ Back In Christmas With Handguns

http://irregulartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/gunchristmas.jpg

For those preachy people who insist that guns are by nature incompatible with the real meaning of Christmas, I have some understanding and sympathy, recognizing that religious texts like the New Testament are open to a great deal of creative reinterpretation to suit the desires of particular religious followers. I do suggest, however, that advocates of non-violence recognize that there is much in Christianity that supports violence and weapons ownership, rather than repudiating. Perhaps the Christmas holiday, which tells a story prefiguring terrible torture, execution and vengeance, isn’t really the best foundation for a message of peace.

Gingrich Wants To Imprison Judges Who Refuse To Force Religion In Schools

http://irregulartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/newttoonasty.jpg

The ruling made perfect sense to those Americans who are familiar with the First Amendment of the Constitution. Newt Gingrich, however, thinks it’s an outrage that public schools aren’t used to promote Christianity on the public dime. So, he wants Judge Biery hauled off to prison.

Jonathan Turley Deceives About Obama’s Support For UN Religious Tolerance Resolution

http://irregulartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/turleydishonest.jpg

There are real instances of religious discrimination. There’s no need for Jonathan Turley to go making up stories about threats to religious freedom. That’s just what he has done, however, with his dishonest and inaccurate article about United Nations Human Rights resolution 16/18.

Ricky Perry Would Amend The Constitution To Reiterate Right Of Prayer

http://irregulartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/perryhalf.jpg

Rick Perry has proposed a constitutional amendment to give public school students the right to pray, but they already have that right. There is no ban on public school prayer by students. The only thing schools and students aren’t allowed to do is to force anyone to pray.

Quincy and Charleston Unitarian Universalists Continue Pattern Of Christian Dominance

http://irregulartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/uualackofdiversity.jpg

These UU congregations all promote one particular religion – Christianity – over all others, in just about the same ratio. There’s not just a lack of diversity within Unitarian Universalist congregations. There also seems to be a lack of diversity between congregations. Unitarian Universalism insists that it isn’t promoting any creed, but these results show that it is promoting a particular creed – a special blend consisting mostly of Christianity, with a drop of Buddhism mixed in.

Biggest UU Congregation Reflects UUA Christian Dominance

http://irregulartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/tulsasouls.jpg

In Tulsa’s local version of Unitarian Universalism, I found the very same problem I’ve seen elsewhere. Unitarian Universalism claims to be diverse, and claims to be welcoming, but when non-Christians walk through the door, they find themselves left in a corner, ignored at best, and often belittled.

With Religion and Science, Ignorance Is Not Mutual

http://irregulartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/scilitrelbel.jpg

The results showed that religious identity is negatively correlated with scientific literacy. Non-religious Americans were the group with the highest scientific literacy. Non-Christian religious Americans scored higher than Christian Americans. Earlier, the The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found in a study last year that non-religious Americans have greater religious literacy than religious Americans do.

The War On Sacrificial Baby Day!

http://irregulartimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/sacrificialbabyday.jpg

In order to meet the high expectations of Joan Clayton, I propose the following theological holiday greeting: “Happy Sacrificial Baby Day… For lo, a child is born, for no other purpose than to be tortured and executed on a sacrificial crucifix in a weird ceremony of blood that’s supposed to compensate for our own feelings of guilt.”
