Why exactly are you so worked up about same-sex marriage?

The people opposed to same-sex marriage here in Maine have run out of answers to that question.

First, they said same-sex marriage would destroy other marriages. But other states legalized same-sex marriage and the divorce rate hasn’t shot up in those states.

Then, they said that same-sex marriage would hurt children. But there’s been no evidence of increased harm to children in the states where same-sex marriage is legal. Indeed, its in the states where children appear to be most valued that same-sex marriage has been legalized.

What’s left? The truth. Finally, the campaigners against same-sex marriage are being honest about their motivations. I spotted this campaign sign along Maine’s Route 17 yesterday:

Maine sign on same-sex marriage found on Route 17: No On 1: GOD Defined Marriage. Don't Defy HIM.

Do what my God says, or else.

That’s all the campaigners against same-sex marriage have left. It’s no wonder that a number of states are poised next Tuesday to jump away from this magical spear-sharpening approach and finally make equality legal.

To keep this website chugging, Irregular Times sells bumper stickers, buttons and shirts from the left side of the political spectrum. There are a lot of different designs we’ve put together over the years — over 10,000 of them, on many subjects. But although we have made more than ten thousand pieces of political gear available, the set of those designs that sell well is a much smaller set. Some of those designs are frankly a lot more popular than others; the most-sold items indicate the spirit of the times, the political Zeitgeist.

These were the 50 top-selling pieces of political gear we offered during the month of July 2012:

Among the designs in the top 50, some themes pop out more frequently: a full 22 out of 50 best-selling designs support the re-election of Barack Obama. A further 5 of the designs oppose the Republican Party, and 3 out of our top 50 designs support the Green Party and the Green presidential candidate Jill Stein. Only one of the top 50 designs, on the other hand, refers to the occupy movement, only one to the peace movement, and only one to the environmentalist movement.

There are a number of other subjects covered on our bumper stickers that just don’t make the Top 50 list. We have an entire store devoted to secular and atheist buttons and bumper stickers, but the best-selling secular bumper sticker (Stop Putting Words in my Mouth — God) was July’s 75th-best seller. Pro-Choice stickers sold even less.

Is this the set of priorities we’d like to see? Frankly, no — but this list does indicate where the interest is, and where it isn’t.

While walking by the side of the road today here in Maine, I encountered the following campaign sign for Paul LePage, a Republican candidate for Governor.

A bewilderingly unclear campaign sign might be better for Paul LePage than a crystal clear one: LePage, after all, has been bizarrely calling for the insertion of creationism into the public school curriculum. Odder still is his declaration that yes, even after the disaster of the BP Deepwater Horizon spill, he’d support opening up the waters off Maine (big economic engines: tourism and fisheries) to drilling for oil. Given those stances, a little obfuscation might be just the thing to gain votes.

Robert J. Moore started seeing “Single?” yard signs everywhere:

I seriously can’t take a ten minute drive without passing one of these signs. What fascinates me more, however, is that they never seem to last more than a few days in one spot. In most cases, I’ll see a “Single?” sign somewhere and the next time I drive by it will be gone. I can only assume that these signs are being taken down by whomever maintains the property where they are placed (they are almost always stuck in the lawn of a public park or building).

The fact that these signs are still so prevalent today, more than a year after I saw the first, means two amazing things:

* Despite their short shelf-life (or, lawn-life), sticking these plastic signs into the ground in small towns has proven financially viable (I can’t imagine that a year’s worth of data to the contrary would result in the business continuing to print and plant these signs).
* Someone must be monitoring and replacing these signs as they are taken down. When you consider the number of towns likely involved in this system, it’s clear that this is far from a one-man show.

Then, just this past Friday, I saw the most amazing sign yet. A town not far from my house is called Haddon Heights, NJ. It is a miniscule town that occupies just 1.6 square miles of land and has a population of barely 7,000 people. Furthermore, 56% of the population is married and 25% is under the age of 18 (thanks Wikipedia!). Not exactly a ripe market for a dating business. Nonetheless, as I drove through the town, I saw (no exaggeration) twenty signs that read “Single? www.HaddonHeightsDating.COM.”…

You may have seen these, too. What’s the story behind these signs? Moore figures it out and shares what he knows with you in an article oozing with the infectious pus of giddy curiosity. Moore’s research skills are on impressive display as he uncovers a vast and quite possibly nefarious network stretching across the country, overseas as far as India, and through tens of thousands of websites online. Following Moore’s line of thought and course of research was both entertaining and illuminating.
