The Hastings amendment would have restored the integrity of environmental impact assessments to their current levels. H.R. 2331 would restrict the scope of those assessments, in the interest of rushing approval of new offshore drilling operations – even those in dangerous deepwater conditions such as those that caused the BP rig to explode and sink in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Institute of Research for Development has conducted a study that documents the impact of overfishing in the growth of jellyfish swarms. As predator fish that typically keep the number of jellyfish in check have been stripped out of the oceans by humans hungry for sushi, the world’s jelly populations have been free to reproduce in ever larger numbers.
The Obama White House had in its possession large numbers of photographs of endangered marine animals covered in oil – including photographs of huge piles of garbage bags filled with dead sea turtles. Obama decided to cover up the photographs, to keep them secret from the American people – in order to protect Big Oil.
